Hunger Striking Imprisoned Activists’ Health Deteriorating in Iran Prisons

Eight prisoners of conscience have been on hunger strike in Evin, Central Karaj and Rajai Shahr prisons since weeks ago. The prisoners have started indefinite hunger strikes in objection to prison conditions and the unjust charges that they have been convicted of.

Eight prisoners of conscience have been on hunger strike in Evin, Central Karaj and Rajai Shahr prisons since weeks ago. The prisoners have started indefinite hunger strikes in objection to prison conditions and the unjust charges that they have been convicted of.

 

"Many prisoners attempt to confront the daily injustices of prison life the only way they can—through hunger strikes. But in turn, these hunger strikes exacerbate existing illnesses and can also lead to new ones".

 

Arash Sadeghi, student rights activist, is on hunger strike in ward 8 of Evin Prison since 37 days ago. The prison clinic specialist has recommended that Mr. Sadeghi be transferred to a hospital, but Mr. Sadeghi has refused hospitalization for medical treatment for as long as the wardens force him to be handcuffed and wear official prisoner clothes.

 

Arash Sadeghi started his hunger strike following the arbitrary arrest of his wife Golrokh Iraee on October 25, 2016. Mr. Sadeghi plans to continue his hunger strike until Iran's officials release his wife Golrokh from prison, say local sources.

 

Filmmaker Hossein Rajabian is on hunger strike since more than 32 days ago. He was diagnosed with an infection in his left kidney, confirms the human rights news agency HRANA. He along with his brother Mehdi Rajabian started hunger strikes to protest against the authorities who split them up in two different wards of Evin Prison on October 28, 2016. Musician Mehdi Rajabian was granted a four-day medical furlough after 30 days of hunger strike on November 27, 2016.

 

Amir Amirgholi, the former student rights ctivist, is on hunger strike since 14 days ago. He started his hunger strike after suffering a beating by a non-political prisoner. Amir Amirgholi, 33, was arrested in the street by security forces and sentenced to 19 years and six months in prison by Branch 15 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court. Corrupt Judge Abolghassem Salavati handed down the sentence.

 

Mohammad Ali Taheri, Iranian physicist and cofounder of a mystical network, is in an unknown situation since the last update from him by his lawyer over a month ago.

 

Ali Shariati, political prisoner, started a hunger strike when he was arrested to serve his five-year prison term on October 31, 2016.

 

Vahid Sayadi Nasiri started a hunger strike on October 16, 2016 in objection to his detention. He has been detained for the past 13 months in a state of limbo.

 

Foad Rezazadeh, Sunni prisoner, began a hunger strike in Rajai Shahr Prison on November 22, 2016 in protest to the authorities rejecting his request for conditional release.

 

Morteza Moradpour, Azerbaijani rights activist, has been on hunger strike in Hall 12 of Karaj Central Prison since 36 days ago.
