Iran: at Least 120 Prisoners hanged, Most for Alleged Drug-Related Crimes, from January-May

Neither death penalty nor the unusual punishment is enough to achieve peace in the world;

the death penalty has no place in a civilized society, when will it be abolished?


Six prisoners were hanged in Urmia prison on January 13, 2016. The prisoners were sentenced to death on alleged charges of "murder", rights groups reported.

A 25-year-old prisoner was hanged in public in Shabestar County on January 7, 2016. He was sentenced to death for alleged charges of "murder", Tabnak News Agency said.

A man was hanged in public for alleged charges of "murder" on January 7, 2016, in one of the villages of Khoy County in West Azerbaijan Province.

At least 16 prisoners were hanged in Central Qazvin prison in January for alleged charges of "drug-related crimes", the Attorney General of Qazvin said.

A man was hanged in public for alleged charges of "murder" in Miandoroud County of Mazandaran Province.

Two prisoners, Moslem Abarian and Khaled Kurdi, were hanged in Yazd prison for alleged charges of "possessing drugs" on January 26, 2016.

An unknown prisoner was hanged on vague charges of "assassination of a religious leader" in Kermanshah City, the Judiciary Spokesman Mohseni Ejei said.

A prisoner was hanged on alleged charges of "murder" in Central Yasouj prison.

At least seven prisoners, Ayad Mohammadi, Mohammad Zarei, Mehdi Haghshenas, Javad Sadeghi, Mustafa Ejlali, Mohammad-Javad Mozafari and Hussein Moinfar, were hanged on alleged charges of "murder" in Rajai Shahr prison.

At least seven prisoners, including five men and two women, were hanged for alleged charges of "drug-related crimes" in Central Birjand prison on April 14, 2016.

Three prisoners were hanged for alleged charges of "drug-related crimes" in Rasht prison on April 13, 2016.

Four prisoners, Manouchehr Razani, Ahmad Nami, Alireza Sariani and Abdul-Hamid Moradi, were hanged on alleged charges of "drug-related crimes" in Central Urmia prison.

At least 70 prisoners were hanged in the provinces of Ardabil, Alborz, West and East Azerbaijan, Razavi Khorasan, Sistan and Baluchistan, Qazvin, Kermanshah, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, Gilan, Mazandaran, Hormozgan, Hamedan and Yazd in May, HRANA reported.

Iran's authorities astonishingly executed at least 966 people in 2015 and 721 people in 2014; three countries "Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia" responsible for almost 90% of all recorded executions, Amnesty International said on April 6, 2016. "In 2015 governments continued relentlessly to deprive people of their lives on the false premise that the death penalty would make us safer", Salil Shetty, Amnesty International's Secretary General stated.
