Detailed Report of Death in Prison, Iran

Many reports of death are annually received that hold out inattention and negligence by authorities of the regime of Iran.

Dozens of prisoners commit suicide by pill or Self-mutilation annually. Most of these prisoners are sentenced to the death penalty or life imprisonment. Medical and health treatment negligence is another cause of death in the prisons of Iran.

Prisoners suffer from lack of facilities such as health treatment, tidy and clean ward, sufficient number of bathroom and toilet, enough space to hold prisoners, etc. Authorities have imposed and tortured prisoners in various methods like peonage, and they have prevented a normal life of prisoners.

Reports of lack of health treatment are most painful and undeniable ones received from the prisons of Iran. The reports cover the calamities like the infestation of lice reported of Rajai Shahr in Karaj, and the worst conditions reported and the untold stories reported of Adel Abad prison in Shiraz.

This report will address death of some prisoners due to torture and lack of health treatment.

Mr. Jalalvand died due to lack of health treatment in Zahedan Central prison on 14 Jan 2015. He, an exiled prisoner, was accused of drug trafficking as the inmates have declared.

Mr. Hayat Balidei (Naser Raiesi), caught Human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) in Chabahr Central prison on March 2014. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on the accusation of drug trafficking and armed robbery.

Mr. Ali Narooi died under suspicious circumstances in Central Urmia prison on 6 March 2014. There are contradictory reports of his death.

Mr. Abdollah Dahmardeh also died under suspicious circumstances in Kerman prison on 19 June 2014. He had spent five years and was accused of drug trafficking. Abdollah died during a surgery in Bahonar hospital of Kerman. Intelligence Service of Iran threatened his family in order to stop them following his case.

Mr. Hamzeh Narooi, 23, a political prisoner, died in Zahedan prison due to severe torture by Intelligence Service on 5 July 2014. His brother reportedly was tortured and killed in Central Urmia prison on Feb 2014.

Mr. Mostafa Nosrati, 30, an armed robbery prisoner, died in Bandar Abbas Central prison on 2 July 2014 because of the internal bleeding. He had suffered from internal bleeding, but officials of the prison had rejected his demand to hospitalizing.

Seven prisoners lost their lives due to lack of health treatment during a week on May 2014.

Two prisoners died because of a wall collapsed in Sanandaj Central prison on Oct 2014. Sanandaj prison is insecure to keeping inmates due to exhaustion as prisoners declared. 

Mr. Babak Ghorbani, a wrestling champion, was arrested and accused to murder on 2012. He committed suicide by taking rice pill after having two years in prison on 15 Nov 2014.

Eight prisoners committed suicide because of inhuman attitude of prison officials on Dec 2014. They committed suicide to object official�s inattention of their terrible condition in Mahabad prison. Two of them died because of the late hospital arrival and lack of health treatment.

Mr. Abolfazl Rajabi was arrested and accused of robbery on 1 August 2013. He died in the police station, but officials had claimed that his death was due to committed suicide.

Mr. Afshin Osanlou, a labor activist, was arrested and sentenced to five years imprisonment at 15 branch of the Revolutionary Court which chaired by Salavati  on 17 Dec 2010. He was frequently tortured in the prison and died on 21 June 2013 due to lack of health treatment after all torture and beating he has been undergone.

Mr. Omid Sajadi, 28, committed suicide a day before his execution on 2013. Omid attempted suicide by self-immolation and authorities had executed him regardless the deterioration of his health condition because of the self-immolation. He was sentenced to death penalty for drug trafficking in Bandar Abbas prison.

Mr. Mohammad Mehdi Zaliyeh Naghshbandian, a political prisoner, was transferred to hospital due to the deteriorating health situation. He, a chemical casualty during the Iran-Iraq War was finally died on 5 June 2012.

Mr. Mansour Radpour, a political prisoner, was arrested and severely beaten by officials on 17 May 2007. He died on 22 June 2012 because of wounds and lack of health treatment.

Mr. Sattar Beheshti, a blogger, was arrested by Iranian Cyber police (FATA) at his house on 30 Oct 2012 and transferred to Evin prison. He was brutally tortured and beaten with multiple blows to his head and body. Sattar died on 3 Nov 2012 because of wounds of the torture. 

Mr. Habibollah Naderi, a political prisoner, died on 11 Feb 2011 due to lack of health treatment.

Mr. Naser Khanizadeh died due to lack of health treatment in Urmia Central prison on 23 Dec 2011.

Mr. Arash Arkan was arrested during the demonstration of the presidential election on 2009 and transferred to Evin prison. He died on 29 Jan 2011 due to lack of health treatment.

Mr. Mohsen Dogmechi was arrested and accused of financial donation to the families of the presidential election prisoners. He died on 28 March 2011 due to lack of health treatment.

Mr. Hassan Nahid, telecommunication engineering, died on 19 April 2011 due to lack of health treatment. 

Mr. Hoda Saber, journalist and writer, was beaten after starting the hunger strike and died on 11 June 2011 because of wounds and lack of health treatment. He was frequently arrested because of his activity.

Mr. Gholamreza Bayat, was arrested and accused of alcohol keeping. He was severely beaten during the investigation in the police office. He died on August 2010.

Mr. Mostafa Nosrati died due to lack of health treatment.

Miss. Zahra Jafari, a political prisoner, died in solitary confinement of Urmia Central prison on 6 Jan 2010.

Mr. Alborz Qasemi, a political prisoner, died in Evin on 20 Jan 2010 due to lack of health treatment.

Mr. Hashem Ramezani, a Kurd citizen, was arrested and tortured in the Intelligence Service detention of Urmia. He died on 6 Jan 2009.

Mr. Ali Badozadeh, a Kurd citizen, was arrested and died because of wounds of the torture on 25 March 2009.

Dozens of Iranian citizens including Mohammad Kamrani, Amir Javadifar, Mohsen Rooholamini, Ramin Aghazadeh, Ahmad Nejatikargar, were arrested during the demonstration of the presidential election on 2009. They were severely beaten and tortured by officials in Kahrizak. These detainees died because of wounds and lack of health treatment.

Mr. Amir Hossain Heshmatsaran, a political prisoner, died in Rajai Shahr on 6 March 2009 due to lack of health treatment.

Mr. Omidreza Mirsiyafi, blogger and journalist, died in Evin prison on 18 March 2009 due to lack of health treatment and beating.

Mr. Abdolreza Rajabsani, a political prisoner, died in Rajai Shahr prison on 28 Oct 2008 due to lack of health treatment.

Mr. Ibrahim Lotfollahi, a student, was arrested and died because of torture on 15 Jan 2008.

Mr. Kaveh Azizpour, a political prisoner, died due to medical negligence in Central Urmia prisonon 17 May 2006.

Mr. Akbar Mohamadi, a political prisoner, died in Evin prison on 30 July 2006 due to health treatment negligence and beating after his hunger strike.

Mr. Valiollah Feyzmahdavi, a student activist, died in Rajai Shahr prison due to the hunger strike and lack of health treatment on 6 Sep 2006.

Mr. Ali Batrani, an Ahwazi citizen, was tortured and died on 15 April 2005. His body was reportedly found in the Karoun River, on 18 April 2005.

Mr. Zabihollah Moharami, a Baha�I citizen, died under suspicious circumstances after having years in Abarghou, Ardekan and Yazd prisons on 14 Dec 2005. He reportedly died of medical negligence.

Mr. Mohamadreza Rajabisani died in ghezel Hesar prison on 9 Nov 2004. He, a disabled war veteran, was transferred to prison after a street fighting. Officials of the prison had denied health treatment for his special situation that the negligence caused his death.

Miss. Zahra Kazemi, an Iranian-Canadian photographer and reporter, was severely tortured by Saeed Mortazavi and died in Baghiyyatollah al-Azam Military Hospital on 26 June 2003.

Miss. Zahra Bani Yaghoub, a doctor and volunteer medical service, was arrested and beaten by Moral Police (plainclothes Basiji). She died on 13 Oct 2007 because of wounds of her body, but authorities declared that she committed suicide by a piece of cloth.   

13 prisoners died in shahrekord due to the gas poisoning and suffocation from lack of oxygen by fire on 4 August 2014. Officials of the prison had prevented fire rescue team�s helps to prevent prisoners� escap.

Mr. Ali-Akbar Sa'idi Sirjani, an Iranian writer and journalist, died in custody eight months after his detention at one of the safe houses of the Intelligence Ministry in Shemiran neighborhood in northern Tehran on 25 Nov 1994. But, Iranian authorities gave the cause of his death as a heart attack, although his daughter, Sayeh Sirjani, denied allegations and said her father had no history of heart ailments.
